We have just released a new version of Headline Viewer. This version has a couple of exciting new features I want to tell you about.
The first is a popup blocker. Since we started working with the integrated browser in Headline Viewer we have noticed that many of the pages displayed by our integrated providers are serving popup advertisements. This combined with our unique auto-flip feature could bury your desktop in unwanted Internet Explorer windows. To avoid this situation we have implemented a blocking feature that prevents the integrated browser from displaying any new windows. When Headline Viewer detects a popup it displays a message (shown right) on the browser title bar. If for any reason you want to see a popup window holding down the 'Ctrl' key will disable this feature. For example you can display any link in a new window by holding down 'Shift' and 'Ctrl' while you click on it.
The second new feature is our improved navigation via the 'Next' and 'Previous' buttons. Clicking on the drop-down (little down arrow) part of these buttons displays a menu with all the titles of the next or previous articles for the current provider in it. Clicking on any of these will bring you directly to that article. These menus also have quick links to the next and previous providers. See below:
Download it now and try it for yourself.
There is a new preview release of Headline viewer in the download section.
We are really excited about this version. It has all the major features for 0.9.8 including a built-in browser. It looks great (see screenshot below) and works really well. Anyway don't just take our word for it, download it and try it out for yourself!
All that remains to be done for the full release is tidy up a few options, redo the help, take some more screenshots and put some licensing information in the installer.
Headline viewer is being revived... Many things have changed in the world of news syndication since the last release (July 2001). Things have also changed here at headlineviewer.com; we are under new ownership (SeventhWave Software). Over the last few months we have been working hard to bring not only the software but also the website and documentation up to date.
There will be more information to follow. As you can see from the website the target date for the next release is March 1st. For now there is a preview release of Headline Viewer on the download site. Enjoy the new website, download the preview and check back here on Feb 1st.
